Tips to make you frying pan live longer

It doesn't matter how good or expensive your frying pan is. If you want them to last longer and stay fit, you have to treat them properly. We all react well to basic care and so does tableware.

Before cooking

Whether you cook with state of the art induction frying pans or traditional Teflon, the best way to keep a nonstick surface actually nonstick is to pour a little bit of fat, butter or, best of all, olive oil and spread it. If you are into healthy cooking and thing this oil will sabotage your diet, consider that two or three drops will be enough if you spread them with a silicon brush or some kitchen paper.

Kitchen tools that get on well with a frying pan

Teflon frying pans are known for the need to use only wooden or plastic kitchen tools while cooking. This is because metal can scratch the Teflon, which is the layer that makes the frying pan nonstick. This applies also to induction frying pans and stainless steel frying pans.

A question of temperature

Sometimes we are in a hurry and tend to preheat the frying pans too quickly by using the maximum temperature. This accelerates the frying pan age. Try to keep the preheating one level lower the temperature will be still hight enough. All types of frying pan will be thankful.

And a second question of temperature

Because we know that soaking stuff in water after using it in the kitchen helps with the washing up, we tend to do so when the tableware is still hot. frying pans suffer from this sudden temperature changes. This might result in tiny cracks on the nonstick surface. The cracks will not be noticeable at the beginning, but they will end up finishing your frying pans life sooner than later.

Forget about the dishwasher

We have been talking about how to keep the nonstick surface nonstick. Dishwashers are very effective because they are aggressive. These machines use soap that dissolves into salt and salt scrubs. That´s why glasses tend to lose the transparency and shine. Imagine what that can do to the Teflon. If you really think you need some extra cleaning, put the frying pan in the dishwasher alone, choose a high temperature and do not add soap.

Use the sponge, not the scrubber

Nowadays washing up soaps are very potent and make a lot of foam. Abundant foam and a sponge is all we need, together with some patience, to clean our frying pans. Scrubbers are too aggressive and they will surely damage the nonstick surface.  If we soak the frying pan in water and soap (when it is not too hot) and then we wash it long enough with a sponge, it will not suffer but will live longer. If you really think it needs a deeper cleaning, you can use a very soft scrubber (there are some specially designed for frying pans). try not to do this more often than every two weeks.
